Scalp: how to care for and protect it in the summer

What factors affect the scalp?

Although it may seem that it is almost covered by hair, a sunburned scalp is one of the symptoms that shows us that this is an area that also suffers and, therefore, requires specific care. And it is a shame that, sometimes, this is the only way to notice its needs. In summer, the scalp is also affected by the sun, water, and salt, agents that can cause dehydration and sunburn. In addition to pain, the consequences will be weaker hair and an imbalance that can lead to a change in the hair fiber, making it more oily or dry than usual.

How should you care for your scalp in the summer?

For the scalp to stay healthy in summer, we must add a few steps to shampoo and masks from spring.

Step 1: Use a scalp scrub.

Starting from the beginning, you should apply a suitable exfoliant. This works in the same way as when we apply it to the skin: it removes dirt that may have been stuck in the hairline, traces of hair products, and dead cells. In addition, it oxygenates the hair and stimulates circulation in the scalp, helping the hair grow in a healthy way. It is a product that contains small particles, so it is recommended that you use it before washing your hair. Apply it twice a week, moisturizing the roots. Perform a small massage.

Step 2: Choose the right shampoo.

Shampooing is the most basic care; however, many hairdressers agree that not everyone knows how to do it correctly. The product should be applied to the roots and massaged for two or three minutes so that it performs its cleansing function and penetrates the hair bulb well. Remember that it is recommended to wash your hair twice to ensure complete cleaning and that the water should not be excessively hot, as this can damage the hair.

Step 3: Use a mask and conditioner.

After shampooing, you should apply the conditioner and mask. It is important to know that this type of product is only applied from the middle to the end. Following this instruction will help your scalp stay free of residue for longer.

Step 4: Protective oils are important.

Once we have assimilated this basic routine, we can add some more steps that will help protect the scalp from external agents. Hair oils are applied to the scalp and provide nutrition to the hair fiber while protecting it from external agents such as pollution, which weaken the integrity of the hair.

Step 5: Apply sunscreen daily.

On the other hand, just as we protect our skin from the sun, it is very important to apply a specific sunscreen to our hair, especially during the months when we are exposed to the sun’s rays more directly. It will be the sunscreen that prevents our scalp from burning. They are usually applied in spray format, so they are very convenient to use.
